A seminar was held to introduce cutting-edge information and communication technologies such as artificial intelligence and to seek ways to apply such technologies to national defense information.

The Defense Information Communication Association held the seminar on the 24th at the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan-gu, Seoul under the theme of ‘AI Infrastructure-based Industries and National defense’. The seminar introduced six companies developing advanced information and communication technologies that can be applied to defense informatization.

The seminar started at 10 am with an opening speech by Kim Jae-min, president of the Defense Information Communication Association. The speech was followed by a keynote by Song Youngseon, president of the Korea Commercial Software Association. The presentations of six companies, including LSD Tech, NVIDIA, UNISEM, O2once, Cubixel, and KT, proceeded until the afternoon.

Beginning the presentations, was senior researcher Kim Minjae of high-performance server manufacturer, LSD Tech. Kim presented the company’s new MAC-T (Multi Array Channel-Transaction) technology for the military, under the theme of ‘high-performance computing in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and next-generation defense.’

Kim stated that “the MAC-T technology groups and parallelizes transactions by channel, such as highway lanes. This minimizes server bottlenecks and maximizes CPU efficiency. Further, SSD disks can be used as memory areas and support optimal streaming services, ultimately securing fast and stable network transmission.”

Afterward, Executive Vice President Park Seonghee presented under the theme ' Data center site selection to construction launch.' Park introduced experiences in preparing the Solis Data Center (IDC) to be built in Naepo, Chungcheongnam-do. He emphasized the importance of securing a location with sufficient power and air conditioning.

Next, Nvidia Korea CEO Yoo EungJun presented under the theme of 'the present and future of AI, as seen by NVIDIA.’ Yoo noted that "for AI to succeed, there must be enough talents working in AI, along with the three conditions of big data, algorithms, and computing power." Introducing the NVIDIA computing platform, Yoo added that “for an AI-based business to succeed, a product must be introduced to the market, and the CEO must make the first call.”

In the afternoon session, Choi Heungmook, director of UNISEM’s research center, presented on the topic, 'Deep learning-based image analysis application technology'. Examining the history of deep learning, Choi introduced examples of deep learning technology applications developed by UNISEM. The applications included an intelligent traffic control system, factory safety and quality check system, and an AI Edge Box that notifies dangers around forklifts or at night.

Following Choi was Kim Sejin, CEO of O2Once, who presented 'CCTV technology in the age of AI image processing'. Kim recalled wondering what could be done to help AI film high-quality videos in unfavorable conditions. As a result, Kim spearheaded the development of an AI camera with better pixels, lens and focus synchronization, high-performance zoom, laser lighting, and more. Kim compared how the company’s technology clearly differs from that of existing cameras.

Cubixel CEO Kim Taegeun then followed and presented on 'hologram technology and application in the fourth industrial age.' He introduced FSH (Flying over Scanning Holography) automatic optical technology that allows shooting in adverse environments in which it is difficult to shoot with existing technology. Kim stated that “It is possible to obtain ultra-precise 3D hologram information with a single image. A clearer image can then be obtained through correction via digital calculation.”

Lastly, KT's Managing Director Lee Youngwook made a presentation under the theme, ‘Quantum Cryptographic Communication Technology and Implications for Defense Infrastructure'. After explaining quantum cryptography communication Lee explained that “KT has completed the development of a quantum cryptography communication system.” Lee also added that “cryptographic services are available without replacing existing transmission equipment.” He noted that “as it is a new technology, there is no certification system yet,” and urged the National Institute of Security and Technology to “prepare the necessary certification programs.”

The seminar was initially to be attended by personnel from related organizations such as the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the headquarters of each military, and the Blue House 90th corps. However, following social distancing guidelines, many were unable to attend the event. The National Defense Information Communication Association plans to organize the material presented at the seminar and distribute it to related organizations for reference.
